View, titled 'The Promenade', featuring the Wesleyan Methodist chapel, latterly named the 'Bow Mission' in Bow Road, Poplar, looking east. The church, founded by Reverend Alexander McAulay, was built in 1865 in the style of a Roman Temple with a pediment above the front elevation, initially for 1000 worshippers. It was damaged by bombing during World War II and rebuilt in 1951 in a style typical of the era. The immediate neighbouring buildings include the three-storey offices of the Equitable Life Assurance Society along with others of a similar height, all since demolished and replaced by a low-rise housing blocks, commercial premises and a care home. The busy street scene includes numerous horse-drawn carriages, covered waggons and carts, seen carrying timber planks. The tree-lined pavement is, likewise, busy with pedestrians featuring two well-dressed women with a canopied pram, a postman in uniform, a youth running after a carriage, and a dog.
