Description
The back gardens of a row of nineteenth-century terraced houses at Dace Road on Fish Island, Bromley-by-Bow. The wooden picket fencing is poorly maintained, and is patched in places with wood offcuts and chicken wire. A tin bath can be seen by the back door of one of the houses. Fish Island is not really an island but a triangular area bound by the Hertford Union Canal, the River Lea and the A12. By the turn of the nineteenth century, about the time this photograph was taken, the area was one of intense, diverse industrial activity. Today Fish Island with its rich industrial heritage is a conservation area and earmarked for substantial regeneration. These two-storey brick dwellings no longer exist.
