Title
Building at rear of Grafton Way
Description
Building at rear of 43 Grafton Way (formerly Grafton Street), Fitzrovia. Nineteenth-century plans show this building was originally part of 43, but was divided off at some point in the early-twentieth century. Here the separate rear building is undergoing demolition. Three workmen are using a wheelbarrow as a makeshift hoist to move material between levels, and the lack of hard hats, high vis clothing and site safety measures is striking. The UK Health and Safety Executive recorded 166 fatal accidents in construction in 1974, a year after this photograph, equivalent to roughly a quarter of all deaths at work. The UK Government passed the Health and Safety at Work Act in 1974 and set up a Health and Safety Executive to enforce health and safety law. Contemporary aerial mapping shows the land behind number 43 has been rebuilt, whilst the terrace fronting Grafton Way is Grade II listed, listing number 1113067.
