Title
Interior of a house in Doughty Street
Description
A view of the entrance hall of a terraced Georgian house at 54 Doughty Street, Holborn. The floor is a geometric tile pattern. An illuminated sign says "enquiries" and the ceiling is lavishly decorated with a pair of circular designs and vine leaf wreaths in the arches, mouldings, corbels and stucco cartouches of allegorical figures. A light hangs from the centre of one of the circles. A double glass panelled door separates the hall from the entrance door. A noticeboard on the wall refers to meetings and the "Daily Telegraph Chapel". Since the building was occupied by The Society of Lithographic Artists, Designers, Engravers & Process Workers, this refers to members of that union in the "chapel" or branch at the Daily Telegraph newspaper. Similarly "engineers & mounters chapel" refers to members of the union in those parts of the printing industry. A terrace completed in 1820, numbers 39-47 and 49-62 and their railings were Grade II listed in 1974, listing number 1356734 (number 48, Dickens's house, is listed separately).
