Title
Houses in Brunswick Square
Description
View looking west from a roundabout onto a terrace of four-storey houses at 10-28 Brunswick Square, Bloomsbury. The houses are fronted with spear top railings and stepped paths. The first floors are lined with lattice balconies and a cornice runs the length of the third floor. A To Let sign can be seen on one of the properties. On the right is Brunswick Square green, encircled with railings and occupied by bare trees. Brunswick Square was constructed in the late eighteenth century by James Burton as part of the Foundling Hospital Estate. These houses served as private residents, including for several governors of the Foudling Hospital and the secretary of the East India Company, James Cobb, who stayed at 10 Brunswick Square from 1797 to 1812. The terrace was demolished in the 1970s to make room for the Modernist Brunswick shopping centre and residential estate. Also called the Foundling Court, the Brunswick Centre was Grade II listed in 2000, listing number 1246230.
