Description
View from Brunswick Square of the Brunswick Centre under construction and the terrace of buildings on the south side of Bernard Street, Bloomsbury. Starting from the left is the geometric six-storey residential building called Downing Court; a previous building on the site was the home of the author of Peter Pan, Sir James Matthew Barrie. On the right is the modernist Brunswick Centre, also called the Foundling Court, which was constructed between 1967 and 1972 by by Patrick Hodgkinson and completed by L. Brian Ingram and T.P. Bennett and partners. This complex was Grade II listed in 2000, listing number 1246230. Further down the street is a terrace of four-storey brick buildings at 11-28 Bernard Street. These are Grade II listed, listing number 1244497. This terrace was constructed by James Burton as part of the Foundling Hospital Estate between 1799 and 1803. Towards the end of the street is the corner buildings on Russell Square, as well as the eight-storey Russell Hotel under scaffolding. The hotel was constructed by Charles Fitzroy Doll between 1892 and 1898 and is Grade II listed, listing number 1246152. The street is lined with parked cars and parking meters, and pedestrians can be seen walking down the street. Bernard Street was named after Sir Thomas Bernard, who played a prominent role in the administration of the Foundling Hospital between 1787 and 1810.
