Weymouth Court in Weymouth Street
Description
View of the front elevation of six-storey mansion flats and shops of Weymouth Court, 1 Weymouth Street, Marylebone. Situated on the corner of Weymouth Street and Hallam Street, the image looks down both streets. Impressive facade designed by the architect William G. Shoebridge for the developer Leon Peczenik of Portland Place. Stone bays, oriels, balconies and angled turrets with cupolas, red-brick facade with shaped gables. When completed in 1907 Weymouth Court contained twelve flats and two ground-floor shops. The psychoanalyst Dr Estelle Maud Cole kept an office at 12 Weymouth Court in the 1920s. Others associated with the block include the journalist and broadcaster Gilbert Harding (d. 1960), who spent the last years of his life in flat number 6; the pathologist Professor Keith Simpson, and the entertainer Hughie Green, who was born in his parents’ flat there in 1920. A 'flats for sale sign' listed by Allsop is attached to the railings and cars are parked on both the north and south side of the street.
