Description
Front elevation of terraced houses at 56 Upper Montagu Street, Marylebone, looking east. Part of a terrace of four-storey plus basement, brick-built townhouses. The buildings are two windows wide and some have shops on the ground floor. At number 56 is Freedell boutique with ladies dresses and a mannequin displayed in the window and a 'Sale' sign in the shop door. Partial view on the left of number 58 which also has a shop on the ground floor and partial view on the right of number 54 which is only residential and has balconettes on the first-floor windows. Cast-iron area railings protect the basement well of number 54. A Citroen CX and a Ford Granada Mk I with a dented nearside front wing are parked in the street which has parking meters and painted parking bays. The buildings lie within the 270-acre estate granted in 1552 to Sir Henry William Portman, Lord Chief Justice to Henry VIII. Numbers 56-62 were Grade II Listed in 1973; entry 1357324, and number 54 was Grade II Listed in 1973; entry: 1222337.
