Description
View of the front elevations of four-storey brick terrace of public house the Mason’s Arms and 24-2 Seymour Place, Marylebone. The terraces was built c1780-1800 as part of Portman Estate development. The Mason’s Arms public house is situated on the corner of Seymour Place at 51 Upper Berkeley Street. The public house was established in 1778 and rebuilt in 1870 and has arched glazed windows. The bracket lantern carriage light on the corner of the building has the name of the brewery Watneys and the entrance to Berkeley Bar can be seen to the right under the striped awning. The Mason's Arms was the last place that prisoners being taken to Tyburn for execution could stop for a drink and the existing pub on this spot still has manacles on the cellar walls. Beyond the public house is Transatlantic Information & Booking Service Ltd., a travel agency at 24 Seymour Place with travel brochures in the window.
