Houses in Queen Anne Street
Description
View of the front elevations of terraced houses at 56-60 (even) Queen Anne Street, Marylebone. The houses have four main storeys plus basement. Railings surround the basement areas. Number 58 in the centre of the image is three storeys wide and also has a mansarded attic. A sign over the doorway of number 58 reads: "National Marriage Guidance Council". The organisation still exists as Relate. It was the home of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists from 1932 to 1960. A later blue plaque on number 58 records that the composer Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) stayed at the house in 1851. Dating from the 1760s and built as part of the Portland Estate development, 58 Queen Anne Street was Grade II listed in 1970; listing number 1227349. It was built by George Mercer. The first occupant, by 1770, was Edmund Boyle, 7th Earl of Cork and 7th Earl of Orrery. By 1787 it was occupied by Richard Penn, MP for Appleby, a former deputy governor of Pennsylvania and grandson of William Penn. Scaffolding structures can be seen on the roof and on the ground in front of the house. A rope runs between the two. Two builder's skips can be seen in front of the house as well as a pile of bricks. All the houses still exist. Number 60 is two storeys wide and has a gable roof with round window at the attic level.
