House in St Christopher's Place
Description
Rear elevation of 1 St Christopher's Place, Westminster, a plain, eighteenth-century, four-storey brick building. St Christopher's Place dates to the 1760s when it was known as Barrett Court. By the 1830s it had become a rundown slum. In 1869-70, housing reformer Octavia Hill along with Julia, Countess of Ducie, and Emma Brooke began purchasing properties and refurbishing or replacing them. In 1884 the street was renamed St Christopher’s Place, known for its second-hand furniture trade and later for antique shops. In 1967, planning permission for redevelopment on the west side was granted but the developer Robin Spiro was taken with the street’s character and instead embarked on renovation. Spiro planned a retail ‘village’ named Craftown – a glass-roofed precinct, with shops and restaurants specialising in ethnic crafts and cuisine. Although Spiro's vision was never realised, the retail units in the renovated buildings were occupied by ethnic restaurants and shops. This building was one of them, saved by Spiro's plan.
