Title
View of St John's Wood Terrace by Charlbert Street
Description
Front elevations of 30-37 St John's Wood Terrace, Westminster. In the early-nineteenth century, this part of St John's Wood was known as Portland Town after the Duke of Portland who owned the land and was the downmarket part of St John's Wood. The houses in St John's Wood Terrace were built for workers and artisans. Numbers 30-37 are part of a terrace of houses, built in the mid-1830s, featuring semicircular arched doorways, panelled doors under fanlights and first-floor windows with cast iron 'Chinese' pattern balconettes. The second-floor windows have louvred shutters, which seem to be original. Number 37, on the corner of Charlbert Street, is a corner shop with pilastered porch and bow-fronted windows on front and side elevations. In this view, the shop is occupied by Augustus Barnett, an off licence. There is a sign on a standard on the forecourt for 'Augustus Barnett Wines & Spirits'. The houses and shop at 24-37 St John's Wood Terrace are Grade II listed, listing number 1236017.
