Description
Front elevation of 37 Rathbone Street, Westminster. The five-storey, red-brick retail/residential block at numbers 37-45, built in 1910-11, comprises the back wing of the Arts and Crafts-style Lancaster Court at 36-39 Newman Street. The shopfront at number 37 has a sign, 'Dolly Dolly, Wiseguy, XXXX, Entrance'. Large dormer windows in the upper storey are built into a mansard roof. Originally known as Glanville Street after the landowner who laid it out in 1764-65, and from the 1790s as Upper Rathbone Place, Rathbone Street acquired its present name in 1935 when it was also renumbered. Its dogleg and westward slant follow the St Pancras-St Marylebone parish boundaries and the shape of Marchant’s Waterworks, a reservoir and windmill in use until c1760.
