Description
Front elevation of 21 Portman Square, Marylebone, a four-storey end-of-terrace town house on the north side of Portman Square. It forms one composition with 20 Portman Square (Home House), which is to the right. Ground-floor sashes set in blind arcade continue from 20 Portman Square, with same stucco roundels in spandrels; first-floor French casements and glazing bar sashes to upper floors, all under flat gauged arches. Guilloche bands, garland and paterae panels and cornice as on 20 Portman Square; the attic storey with crowning cornice on 21 Portman Square and balustraded parapet on 20 Portman Square. Nineteenth-century cast-iron balcony to first floor on 21 Portman Square and classical-style cast-iron balcony with window boxes on 20 Portman Square. Cast-iron railings with urn finials. A Ford Zephyr 4-door saloon car (F reg.) is parked in the street. Number 21 Portman Square dates to c1772 and was designed by James Adam for art connoisseur William Locke (1732-1810). It is Grade I listed; listing number 1227092. It was altered in 1866, and the principal entrance moved to the side elevation in Gloucester Place. In 2004 the building became part of Home House (19-21 Portman Square), an hotel and private members' club.
