Description
View of an Adam fireplace in a ground-floor front room at 51 Portland Place, Marylebone, prior to its demolition in 1980 (reconstructed 1983 to 1985). The fireplace has a limestone surround decorated with neoclassical motifs and figures in bas relief. The firebox has an inset marble and brass surrounds, with a cast-iron grate embellished with brass finials, and a simple hearth with a stone kerb. Numbers 49 and 51 have been occupied by the diplomatic mission of the Manchu Qing Empire (c1877), later, the embassy of the Republic of China (1912 to 1949), subsequently renamed the People's Republic of China.
