View of a glazed covered passageway, linking the ground floor with the mezzanine level, at the rear of 42 Portland Place, Marylebone. The timber framed structure has a pitched glazed roof, and arched leaded light side windows in the Art Nouveau style. The ground floor has decorative cement and quarry tiling, with the stair fully carpeted. The staircase has cast-iron balustrading and newel post, and a timber handrail with a volute terminal. Steps lead down to a half-glazed door at the lower ground-floor level, past a timber-lined wall in a similar style as the glazed wall, opposite. Former residents include moneylender, Julius (Yehuda) Calisher (1828 to 1877), and Arthur Lewis Raphael (d. 1891), outcast of the wealthy banking family, inveterate gambler, and husband of the painter, Mary F. Raphael (1861 to 1942). The terrace of c1780 James Adam townhouses are Grade II* listed, listing number 1227025 (numbers 34 to 52).
