View of the entrance to a conservatory at the rear of 42 Portland Place, Marylebone, from an upper-floor landing. The arched entrance has steps leading up from a half landing to the originally glazed door, and features a pierced panel above, with a glazed fanlight, and a pierced timber and lined reveal. The stairwell has wainscoting, is papered with a neoclassical pattern, and has a cylindrical-shaded pendant light fitting. The timber-arched vaulted and glass-roofed conservatory, visible beyond the pierced panel, has been converted to a bathroom. Former residents of the house include moneylender, Julius (Yehuda) Calisher (1828 to 1877), and Arthur Lewis Raphael (d. 1891), outcast of the wealthy banking family, inveterate gambler, and husband of the painter, Mary F. Raphael (1861 to 1942). The terrace of c1780 James Adam townhouses are Grade II* listed, listing number 1227025 (numbers 34 to 52).
