View of a rear first-floor office at 42 Portland Place, Marylebone. Probably belonging to either consulting engineers, John Liversedge and Associates, building contractors, D. A. Bull, or the Architects Co-operative Partnership. The Georgian-era room, with its ornate moulded cornices, wainscoting, and carved timber fire surround, is seen furnished with a plan chest, a wooden bookcase, a metal pedestal desk, and notice boards mounted between the rear windows. The floor coverings have been removed revealing bare floorboards, and parquet flooring around the periphery of the room. A gas fire has been fitted in the fireplace, and a telephone and directories have been removed to the mantel shelf. Former residents include moneylender, Julius (Yehuda) Calisher (1828 to 1877), and Arthur Lewis Raphael (d. 1891), outcast of the wealthy banking family, inveterate gambler, and husband of the painter, Mary F. Raphael (1861 to 1942). The terrace of c1780 James Adam townhouses are Grade II* listed, listing number 1227025 (numbers 34 to 52).
