View of a ground-floor front room at 38 Portland Place, Marylebone. The Adam room has plaster moulded panelling and a Georgian polished wood internal door, with a large brass finger plate, in a vestibule featuring an opening with a fluted surround and a wall-mounted fluorescent light above. The Adam fireplace has a gougework limestone surround with marble inlay and urn motifs at the corners, a moulded kerb surrounding the hearth, and is fitted with a metal-lined firebox, seen piled with ashes. The wall-mounted lighting either side of the plain panel on the chimney breast has been removed. The room has parquet flooring. The terrace of c1780 James Adam townhouses are Grade II* listed, listing number 1227025 (numbers 34 to 52). The house was the former home of William Waldegrave (1753 to 1825), first Baron Radstock, and Admiral of the Red, premises of The Institute of Engineering Designers (as observed), and chartered architects, Peter H. Cherry and Partners, latterly the Royal College of Radiology, and is currently the home of an independent school and offices, with luxury apartments planned for the future.
