View of a first-floor front room at 38 Portland Place, Marylebone. The Adam room has a Georgian polished wood internal door, wainscoting, and is decorated with ornate gilded motifs, featuring leaves, griffons, urns, and roundels, and has a large circular gilded ceiling rose. The Adam fireplace has a marble surround and mantel shelf, limestone Ionic pilasters either side, a moulded kerb surrounding the hearth, and fitted with a metal-lined firebox. The room has parquet flooring. Room lighting includes a three-arm wall light, and the main ceiling light, removed. Low shelving units have been fitted either side of the chimney breast, with an electrical socket and switched spur fitted to the left hand unit's plinth. The terrace of c1780 James Adam townhouses are Grade II* listed, listing number 1227025 (numbers 34 to 52). The house was the former home of William Waldegrave (1753 to 1825), first Baron Radstock, and Admiral of the Red, premises of The Institute of Engineering Designers (as observed), and chartered architects, Peter H. Cherry and Partners, latterly the Royal College of Radiology, and is currently the home of an independent school and offices, with luxury apartments planned for the future.
