View of first-floor ceiling of what appears to be a rear room of the Brewers' Society at 42 Portman Square, Marylebone, a house on the south side of the square. The neoclassical design, in relief, features circular and axe head-shaped panels decorated with, figures, festoons, bows, and bands of Vitruvian scrolls, leaves and flower motifs in diamond patterns, with glass globe shaded pendant lights. The ornate cornice has a frieze with neoclassical motifs below, with a gougework frieze with urn motifs above the built-in bookcase, seen filled with books and directories, to the right of the chimney breast. The c1764 house was subsequently redeveloped c1963, together with number 41, by The Research Property Company Ltd, connected for tax reasons to the Brewers' Society and administered by Institute of Brewing Research Fund in an agreement with the land owner, Portman Estates, with a single block concrete-framed office building, itself since replaced with a more modern equivalent. Portman Square is close to the southern boundary of the Portman Estate conservation area.
