View of an Adam neoclassical fireplace in a first-floor front room at 33 Portland Place, Marylebone. The surround has ornate carved torch and figurine designs on pilasters, with swag reliefs on a panel above the opening, below a simple mantel shelf. The firebox has a pierced and polished metal grate, with a reeded back panel. The walls either side are plastered and painted below the moulded dado rail, and papered above, with framed overmantel mirrors on the chimney breast. The house is Grade II* listed, listing number 1227074 (27 to 35). The Adam interior, dating from c1779 and originally by Joseph Rose & Company, is one of the most opulently decorated in the street. Former residents include adventurer Joseph Wyndham, Baron James Blyth, founder of distillers W. A. Gilbey, the Government of Sierra Leone, numerous peers of the realm, and is currently owned by socialite and flamboyant entrepreneur, Edward 'Lord' Davenport.
