Title
Building in Portland Place
Description
Front elevation of 23 Portland Place, Marylebone. Opened in 1937, it is a five-storey block in a Beaux-Arts style, made of steel-framed construction and faced with Portland stone. It has clean neo-Classical lines that blend with the surrounding Grade II* listed Adam houses. Number 23 was built on the site of Adam houses numbers 23 and 25, which were demolished in 1935 to accommodate a new headquarters building for the General Nursing Council for England & Wales (GNC), then based at numbers 20 and 22 opposite. This was a ‘house swap’ engineered by the BBC who, in order to obtain numbers 20-22 for extending Broadcasting House, purchased Lord Waring’s lease to numbers 23-25. A series of decorative paintings of Bacchanalian and other scenes, thought to be by Cipriani, was salvaged from the drawing-room ceilings of numbers 23-25 and incorporated into the new building. The GNC later expanded into neighbouring buildings in this block and two further storeys were added at number 23 in 1961-62. The building is now occupied by its successor body, the Nursing and Midwifery Council, established in 2002. Cars are parked outside.
