View of Portland Place
Description
View of Portland Place, Marylebone, looking south from Devonshire Street. A sign for Weymouth Street can be seen on the east side, along with traffic lights, zebra crossing and traffic sign with black and white stripes forming a two-branch lamppost. Cars are parked either side of road and in the centre. The bronze equestrian statue of Field-Marshal Sir George Stuart White (1835-1912) can be seen from the rear; it is Grade II listed, listing number 1227090. The sculptor was John Tweed and the statue was unveiled in 1922. The statue appeared in an exterior shot of Portland Place in Alfred Hitchcock's 1947 American courtroom drama, The Paradine Case, which was set in England.
