Description
General view of St Leonard's Road, Poplar. Looking north from an elevated viewpoint on East India Dock Road, possibly an upper floor of the London Electricity Board office at numbers 208-212. Railings along East India Dock Road in the foreground protect pedestrians from the traffic and at the entrance to St Leonard's Road is a Belisha beacon pedestrian crossing and a sign for Charles Griffiths Ltd, the company contracted for the demolition of the area. In the left foreground is the cellar of the Sir John Franklin public house (erected 1859) at 279 East India Dock Road. On the east (right) side of St Leonard's Road are the remains of a parade of shops with awnings; numbers 8-16, ending in The Grave Maurice public house at number 18 which is shored up with wooden beams. Behind these buildings is a large, five-storey tenement building called Adelaide Buildings. Further up the street, at number 26 on the corner of Drew Street, is a greengrocers shop with a large, painted sign on the side elevation advertising J. Halls & Son, 'Fruit & Potato Salesmen' and 'Motor Haulage Contractors'. Even further up the street at number 36 is The Hearts of Oak Truman's brewery public house. Ornate cast-iron street lampposts line the street and a Ford Consul 375 convertible is parked in the street. In the far background are the factories situated around the Limehouse Cut. The buildings on the right of this image were demolished to make room for the construction of the A12 Blackwall Tunnel Northern Approach roads (1958-60).
