View of St Leonard's Street
Description
The junction of St Leonard's Street and Devas Street, Bromley (later renamed Bromley-By-Bow and part of the administrative area of Poplar at the time of the photo), looking north from an upper story of Newmill House in the Coventry Cross Estate. Built by the London County Council, with the first blocks opening in 1935, subsequently demolished and rebuilt in the 1990s. On the ground floor in the foreground is a sign for The Duke of Wellington Mann's public house, built at the foot of the flats close to the original pub of the same name at 2-4 Devas Street to allow the creation of the A12 Blackwall Tunnel Approach roads (1958-60) on the vacant lots in front of it. On the right, across St Leonard's Street, is Phillips House and beyond the pedestrian crossing is the entrance to the gas works on the east side of Bow Creek. Next to the gas works entrance is The Mulberry Tree Taylor Walker public house, and to the left of the pub is Twelvetrees House, built in the mid-nineteenth century by industrialist and philanthropist Harper Twelvetrees. In the far distance, the white building is that of the Crown Chemical Works. Several commercial vehicles are present in St Leonard's Street. Many of the buildings in the picture were demolished to make way for the A12 Blackwall Tunnel Approach roads (1958-60).
