Title
Tide Mill and Miller's House in Three Mill Lane
Description
View of eighteenth-century Tide Mill (also known as The House Mill) and adjacent three-storey Miller's House in Three Mill Lane, Bromley-by-Bow. The Tide Mill was originally built in 1776 by Daniel Bisson and later re-built by Philip Metcalfe in 1802 after being damaged by a fire. Used as an alcohol distillery, in 1872 the mill was occupied by J. and W. Nicholson and Co. gin distillers of Clerkenwell. Attached to the end of the mill building is a gas lamp on an iron frame. The adjacent Miller's House was built in the eighteenth century and was once lived in by the miller and his family. The house was bomb damaged during World War II and mostly destroyed with only the facade remaining. The roof is damaged and partly missing, and sash windows are broken. On the left of the mill are iron railings and a temporary wood and wire fence. The mill closed in 1942 and was later preserved as a local heritage site within the London Borough of Newham and owned and run by the House Mill Trust. The building was used for events, exhibitions and tours of the building were offered to the public. The Miller's House was re-built retaining the original facade in 1995 and was used as office space. Tide Mill is Grade I listed; listing number 1080970.
