View of Vesey Street
Description
View of Vesey Street, Poplar, looking towards East India Dock Road and Grundy Street. At the junction of Vesey Street and Grundy Street is the two-storey Victorian Grundy Arms public house owned by Truman Hanbury and Buxton Ltd. Above the corner entrance to the pub is the stem of a lantern with the glass missing. On both sides of the street are vacant sites where demolished houses once stood. Many of the buildings in the area were damaged or destroyed by bombing during World War II, which resulted in the eventual demolition of a number of the houses. Vesey Street has two-storey early nineteenth-century terraced houses, some with iron railings. At the end of the street in East India Dock Road are the remains of the bomb damaged Victorian three-storey King George's Hall. The former Methodist church building was re-opened as King George's Hall by the Duke of York in 1920 as a centre for community activities with a concert hall, a Sunday school and a men's club. Number 84 Grundy Street has floral curtains and an ornate blind visible through the sash windows. Street lamp posts, telephone wire poles and vehicles including lorries are in view. The street is cobbled. The buildings were later demolished and replaced by a mixture of housing and commercial premises in the 1950s and 1960s. The Grundy Arms was replaced by shops including the Chrisp Street Market. Poplar Fire Station was built on the site of King George's Hall in 1967-70.
