Description
View looking east over the building site where new housing is being built on land once occupied by Tetley Street, Poplar. The photograph was likely taken from Langdon House, a 1950s block of flats which overlooked both sides of the area where Tetley Street once stood. On the left is Willis Street. The former roadway for Tetley Street runs down the middle of the building site up to St Leonard's Road. Businesses include D. Breslaw Drapers at 68 St Leonard's Road. Nearby is Cawdor Street which runs from St Leonard's Road to the 1950s four-storey block of flats in Brunswick Road. The A12 was later built on Brunswick Road. In the distance are the large gas holders of the Poplar Gas Works. On the building site are the walls and floors of new housing, stacks of building materials, a lorry from 'Ightham Bricks and Tiles', a workmen's tent and workmen standing near a cement mixer. The Victorian terraced houses and shops in Tetley Street, St Leonard's Road and Cawdor Street were later demolished and replaced by new housing and communal spaces in the 1950s-1960s.
