View of Wick Lane
Description
View of Wick Lane, Bow, looking towards St Mark's Church in Cadogan Terrace. A metal street lamp post, parked car and van are in view. On the left are double wooden gates leading to timber yards belonging to J. and W. Myers and Sons Ltd, timber merchants and importers. Piles of timber are visible in the yard. In the foreground, rubble and a damaged wall show where cottages at Jodrell Terrace once stood. Three of the cottages were badly damaged in World War II bombing and all the cottages were later demolished. Beyond is the front of public toilets with a woman in a white dress standing in the doorway and another person standing nearby. The Church of England Parish Church of St Mark, Victoria Park, was built in a Gothic style in 1872 with a clock tower and spire. Queen Victoria presented a bell to the church in 1873. Despite suffering bomb damage during World War II the church survived but was later demolished and re-built in a modern style in 1973-76. The new building was later used as a Montessori nursery. The toilet block was demolished and became an entrance to a car park. The timber yard on the far side of the bridge later became a garden centre and housing was built on the yard and Jodrell Terrace on the Wick Lane side of the bridge in the 1980s and 1990s. The prefabricated buildings in Victoria Park were later removed.
