Title
Millwall House in Napier's Yard
Description
View of the front elevation of the two-storey Victorian double fronted Millwall House in Napier's Yard, West Ferry Road, Isle of Dogs. Villa built in the classical style in 1840 by David Napier, a Scottish marine engineer who also owned the ship building works on the same site as the house. The yard which was a part of the Millwall Iron Works was then leased to John Scott Russell, where the SS Great Eastern was eventually built in 1858. The house was unusual in that it was home to a wealthy family in an area where many of the buildings were for industrial use. In front of the house are the iron girders of a gantry and behind that is a shed. A fence covered in corrugated iron sheeting is in front of the house underneath the gantry and also on the side of the shed. The house was demolished in the 1970s and replaced by low rise housing at the top of what became De Gama Place in the 1980s. The launch ramp for the SS Great Eastern was retained on the site of the old ship yard.
