Front elevation of 50-56 Abbey Gardens, St Johns Wood. Originally named St Johns Place, it is a small street off Abbey Road. Part of a terrace of three-storey houses with basements built in 1850. Numbers 50-56 have mid nineteenth-century shop fronts. Cornices to the first-floor windows with pediments, and a continuous bombe cast-iron balcony to the first floor. They are Grade II listed, listing number 1066528. Number 50 is not in use as a shop. In 1891, this was a grocers owned by John Richardson who lived there with his wife Maria, his sister-in-law and two nieces. Number 52-54 is Milthorp International. In 1895, number 52 was occupied by dressmaker Miss Annie Cripps, and number 54 by baker George Ireland who lived there with his wife Martha, his son also a baker, and an assistant. Number 56 is Cochrane Design and Construction. In 1891, this was the business premises of chimney sweep Edward Morgan who lived with his wife Jessie, three sons, two daughters and a lodger. Also resident in the house were coachman Henry Hancock, his wife Maria, two daughters and four sons. A third family was resident Marie Twile and her daughter. A total of 18 people. Three cars including a Mini are parked on the forecourt.
