Title
Shop in Poplar High Street
Description
Corner elevation of 225 Poplar High Street, Poplar, looking north-east. At the corner of Bazely Street and Poplar High Street what was once Motor Services Ltd now lies dilapidated with a street sign attached to the boarded up side window. A poster for the People's Cancer Movement, set up by Mr H.Jacobs of Leytonstone and active between May 1951-Aug 1953, reads "IF you had LOST a dear one from cancer you would write your newspaper and M.P. DEMAND greater state aid for cancer research" is pasted to the boarded up window. Painted lettering above the window indicates they sold tyres and [inner] tubes. The double width corner door has wire mesh where there used to be glass panels and metal bars above and chalk numbers have been written on the left frame of the door. Two fluted columns flank the entrance supporting a curved portico. A street sign above shows that Bazely Street was called Bow Lane previously. A small cast iron lamp post with a single, naked bulb is visible. This shop no longer exists and is replaced with a modern parade of shops with flats above.
