Title
Houses in Poplar High Street
Description
Front elevations of shops and houses at 97-107 Poplar High Street, Poplar, looking north-east towards Poplar recreation ground. The terrace is a mix of two and three-storey brick built buildings with shops on the ground floors with one of the shops having a bowed, oriel window. At 103 Poplar High Street is a newsagent (owned by Frederick Blagg in 1915 according to Kelly's Post Office Directory) with several newspaper headline advertisement boards outside and hanging advertisements for Wills's Gold Flake cigarettes and British Oak Shag tobacco. The tallest building at 107 Poplar High Street, previously a Pickfords warehouse, is being advertised by Hampton & Sons as freehold garage premises and at the end of the street, on the corner of Walton's Court, is a mission hall. In the background is the boundary wall with iron railings of the Poplar Recreation Ground and the stone pillars of the southern entrance gate. A woman is walking on the pavement and further down the street the street a man pushes a three-wheel wooden cart with a large metal milk urn [see also Image 99001]. The residential terrace nearest the camera was demolished by 1950 (possibly as a result of bomb damage during the war) with temporary prefabs built in the location and 107-109 became a metal works. The temporary dwellings and the metal works were later demolished when the recreation ground was relocated west and became a bowling green.
