Title
Houses in Poplar High Street
Description
Front elevations of shops and houses at 89-95 Poplar High Street, Poplar, looking east towards the corner of Hale Street. Nearest the camera is number 89, a three-storey brick built terraced residence with a shop on the ground floor with a bowed oriel bay window. Next door with a rectangular oriel window is number 91, possibly a shop of some kind, and in the street a man pushes a three-wheel wooden cart with a large metal milk urn [see also image 99007]. On the near corner of Hale Street is possibly coffee rooms and at 95 Poplar High street, with two street signs for Hale Street on the wall and a mansard roof, is the Queen's Head public house which is now the location of a bowling green. Election posters for Liberal Harold Heathcote Williams, a candidate in South Poplar, reading "Vote Liberal, Rent Up, Rates Up" confirms the date as mid 1920s. All of the buildings have been demolished and this is now the location of Willis House on the Will Crooks social housing estate (built by the LCC as a result of the Sophia Street Clearance Scheme, officially declared in December 1934). This image was originally dated 1950 however the public house was demolished in 1937 and Willis House was erected in 1939 so it must have been taken earlier.
