Poplar Town Hall and Council Offices in Poplar High Street
Description
View of Poplar Town Hall and Council offices at 117 Poplar High Street, Poplar, looking north-west towards the corner of Woodstock Terrace. The Town Hall, with iron area railings and an octagonal tower capped by a copper dome with finial, was built on the corner site in 1870. The main entrance is in the corner tower and the building is constructed of stock brick with Portland stone dressings in a High Victorian free Gothic style with some Venetian detailing. To the left of the council building is a partial view of St Matthias's Vicarage at 115 Poplar High Street, a two-storey, brick built detached house now called Meridian House. Further down Woodstock Terrace, behind the Town Hall is a partial view of the Church of St Matthias. A woman is walking towards a belisha beacon pedestrian crossing. There are several black and white painted iron bollards of different styles in the pavement on both sides of Woodstock Terrace and in the centre of the road is an island with damaged illuminated keep left bollard. Woodstock Terrace is partially blocked by a large mound of soil covered in tarpaulin with a Bedford van parked behind it and a wooden sign in the road for J. Browne Construction Ltd 01-841-8911. Two signs at the entrance to Woodstock Terrace indicate a width restriction of 7ft. The Town Hall and council offices have since been converted to the Lansbury Heritage Hotel. The Poplar Town Hall was Grade II listed in 1983, listing number1260135. St Matthias's Vicarage was Grade II listed in 1950, listing number1357883. The Church of Matthias was Grade II listed in 1950, listing number1065793.
