Vacant lots on Quickett Street
Description
General view of Quickett Street, Poplar, looking south. The picture may have been taken from a first floor window of 15 Wellington Way with Archibald Street in the foreground. The entrance to Quickett Street and the gutters at the side of the road have cobble setts however the main part of the road is tarmac. Quickett Street previously had approximately thirty, terraced houses on either side and a potential claim to fame is that William Bury (one of many "Jack the Ripper" suspects) lodged at number 80. Many of the buildings in the terrace were damaged during the blitz and had to be demolished with two post-war prefabs built at the northern end of the street. All the houses have been demolished and corrugated iron fencing runs down both sides of the road to protect the vacant lots. At the end of the street is Arnold Road (now Tidworth Road) and behind that is the elevated Bow Extension of the London and Blackwall Railway line with overhead electrification gantries. In the far distance are two residential housing tower blocks called Gayton House (closest, on the left) and Sleaford House. The street is being used to park coaches on, at least one of which may be a Bedford VAL. This section of Archibald Street and the whole of Quickett Street no longer exist with the area nearest the camera being landscaped into a park and children's playground called Archibald Open Space. Further down Quickett Street was redeveloped with new residential housing and new streets called Dimson Crescent and Ireton Street.
