Grove Hall Asylum off Old Ford Road
Description
Front elevation of part of the Grove Hall Asylum, off Old Ford Road (this section now called Wick Lane), Bromley by Bow. At the beginning of the 1820s Edward Byas leased Grove Hall, a large mansion built sometime in the first half of the 18th century and surrounded by 12 acres of grounds. The building had previously been used as an academy for boys, run by the Revd Dr James Lindsay until his death in 1821. The asylum started out as an unlicensed, private workhouse or "pauper farm" and was well established by the time of the 1841 census, becoming licensed in 1844. Steps with wrought iron railings lead up to an open glass panel front door where a young man wearing a suit and tie with wing collar and hat inspects some papers. The four-storey (including lower ground) brick built building has a bracketed cornice running along part of the top and has a two-storey extension. This part of the asylum may have been the front entrance of a building described as "Mr Stanions House" on earlier maps. The asylum was closed down in 1905 and by 1908 the Bow Tram Depot (later converted to Bow Bus Depot), on Fairfax Road, extended over the grounds of the asylum to the south-west and by 1921 the building in this image had also been demolished. The area is now gardens of a private housing estate off Wrexham Road.
