Title
Shops in Devons Road
Description
A rear view of the shops at 64-68 Devons Road, Bromley-by-Bow, on the corner with Raverley Street (bottom right). The photograph has been taken from an elevated position overlooking a rubble-strewn derelict site at the back of the properties. A wire fence with iron railings and a tall brick wall with crumbling render separate the properties from the vacant plot. At the time the photograph was taken, number 68 on the right-hand-side was a general corner shop while the premises next door to the left at numbers 64-66 had previously been occupied by Leonard Sargent & Sons, builders merchants and general ironmongers. The ground-floor rear windows of this latter property are boarded up and it looks abandoned and derelict. The two-storey side extension has a bow window on the lower floor. A van is parked in Raverley Street and cobble stones are visible on both it and Devons Road behind. A coat or jacket is hanging on the railings of a vacant site on the far left. Opposite is the turning into Bruce Street. On the right, facing number 68 Devons Road on the other side of the road, is the Duke of Cambridge public house. A sign on the ground-floor window advertises it as a Truman's pub and the fascia promotes stout and Burton ales. A saloon car is parked outside on Grace Street which has been barred off by a low fence. Beyond is a five-storey inter-war block of council housing, the only structure which still stands today. Raverley Street and this section of Grace Street no longer exist; the old buildings have gone, replaced with modern residential development.
