Title
Houses in Devons Road
Description
Early nineteenth-century terraced housing at 77-81 Devons Road, Bromley-by-Bow. The front entrances, with the original wooden panelled doors, open directly onto the street. Each house has a lower ground multi-pane sash window with exterior shutters and two sash windows on the upper floor. An aspidistra in a decorative china pot can be seen in the ground-floor window at number 77, in front of net curtains and a partially-drawn blind. A line of concrete posts and a railing have been added to the pavement as a barrier for pedestrians. Next door to the left, at number 75 Devons Road, the corner of the famous Widow's Son public house can just be seen. This is a Grade II listed building (listing number 1065801) where there is a tradition of placing a freshly baked hot cross bun in a net above the bar every Good Friday, keeping alive the legend of the widow who reputedly once lived here and who would each year bake a bun for her sailor son lost at sea. Today only the pub exists. The row of houses has been demolished and replaced by a modern apartment block.
