Title
East London Stores in Chrisp Street
Description
A view of the East London Stores beer shop at 28 Chrisp Street, Poplar from Grundy Street. A hanging sign advertises Taylor Walker beers; the shop fascia promotes 'prize' ales and stout while the premises also sells wines. Two Taylor Walker pub lamps hang above the pavement on ornate iron brackets. The property next door at 119 Grundy Street was occupied by a taxidermist, a clockmaker and hairdressers during the latter part of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries but is now derelict. The display window shutters are down and the windows in the upper floor are smashed. Grundy Street is cobbled and the poorly maintained low brick wall marks the bridge over the railway line. There is a wooden telegraph pole near the junction. The top of Chrisp Street Market Clock Tower, a local landmark, can be seen rising behind the beer house. The Grade II listed tower (listing number 1450866) was designed by Frederick Gibberd and built as part of Chrisp Street Market as a showcase for the best of British architecture for the Festival of Britain in 1951. This section of Grundy Street no longer exists and is today part of a pedestrian walkway linking Chrisp Street to Brownfield Street. The site of East London Stores is now a car park.
