Title
Boots shop in Chrisp Street
Description
The former premises of Boots the chemists at 75 Chrisp Street, on the corner with Southill Street, Poplar. The shop logo is still visible on the fascias and glass transom lights above the display windows which have been boarded up with timber planking. An ornate iron bracket is fixed between the upper floor sash windows; the hanging sign is missing. 'No Parking' has been hand-painted in large white letters on the brick wall in Southill Street, which is still cobbled. A blurred image of a pedestrian can be seen walking past the vacant, rubble-strewn site next door. The view of Chrisp Street looks to the south-west; a short string of shops at numbers 61-69 can be seen with several people passing by. None of these buildings exist today. They were demolished in the comprehensive post-war redevelopment of Chrisp Street and the neighbouring vicinity. The site now is a Co-Op supermarket. Southill Street is a dead end, servicing the rear of the supermarket and commercial and residential properties in Chrisp Street Market, the UK's first purpose-built shopping precinct. The Grade II listed Chrisp Street Market Clock Tower (listing number 1450866) is just visible through the mist on the far left. Designed by Frederick Gibberd and built as part of Chrisp Street Market to showcase the best of British architecture for the Festival of Britain in 1951, the tower is a local landmark.
