Shops earmarked for demolition at numbers 44-56 Chrisp Street, Poplar, at the crossroads with Tetley Street (on the far right) and the former entrance to Mary Place (near left). The first shop on the right, at number 44, is the former Home & Colonial Store, once one of the UK's largest grocery chains, its distinctive leaded 'bottled-glass' transom lights still clearly visible above the boarded-up display windows. Next door, at number 46, are the derelict premises of John Miller's bakery. A man in a flat cap, his hands in the pockets of a heavy overcoat, stands on the edge of the pavement outside. Between the old bakery and Coppen Brothers, at numbers 52-56, is a vacant site. Coppen Brothers, provisions dealers, appear to be still open for business. The shop's awnings are fully extended. A truck carrying a load of timber planks is parked opposite on Chrisp Street facing south. Two saloon cars can also be partially seen. A sign for 'Teas' is fixed above the upper window of a building on Tetley Street on the far right. The buildings no longer exist; the site is now a car park.
