Description
A view of the derelict premises of Cee King's boot and shoe shop at 62 Chrisp Street, taken from Willis Street, Poplar. The shop fascia includes an advertisement for Metropole Shoes. The property displays a general air of neglect and dereliction with cracked, crumbling plaster, peeling paint and smashed upper -floor windows. Weeds are growing in cracks in the window ledges. Two timber props shore up the building from the Willis Street side. There are Art Deco influenced transom lights above the display windows. Hand-made lettering in the empty window alerts customers that the shop has moved across the street to 4 Market Way in the newly built Chrisp Street Market shopping precinct. Looking north along Chrisp Street on the left, a woman in a calf-length coat pauses to check something in her hand while a second woman in a light dress and jacket walks towards the camera. Outside the old shop is a temporary covered structure labelled LEB (London Electricity Board) Poplar. Beside it are workmen's tools, including a spade. Further up the street is an ornate street lamp as well as delivery vans. Chrisp Street has been substantially redeveloped and none of these buildings exist today.
