Houses in Cottage Street
Late nineteenth-century terraced housing at numbers 24-44 Cottage Street, Poplar. The front doors open directly onto the street, and the two-storey properties have a single window on each floor. Curtains hang at the sash windows. Each house has an air vent at street level under the ground-floor window. Two women chat at the doorway of a house on the right; an old gas street lamp is nearby. The milkman has left pints of milk on the pavement by the doors of several houses and on the window ledge of the house on the far right. A black dog ambles down the street away from the camera. The terrace no longer exists. The houses were cleared by the London County Council and replaced with a public park and playground, part of the Saint Matthias Estate redevelopment.
