Title
Woolworths shop in Chrisp Street
Description
FW Woolworth & Co's shop at 7-11 Chrisp Street, Poplar, with signs advertising a "Cost of Living Sale" starting on 14 May. A man in a cloth cap, hand on hip, pauses to look at the window display while a couple talk on the pavement outside. A bicyle is parked by the kerb. Behind them, a lady pushes a pram towards the camera; there is another pram on the far right. Woolworth's shop awnings are pulled low, shielding displays of clothing, flower pots, and towering stacks of cups and saucers. Next door, the Guy Earl of Warwick public house, run by proprietor EJ Rose, advertises William Younger's Scotch Ales and signs proclaim "Rose's for value". Along the street to the left are Louis Rosen's millinery shop (at number 3) and Mudie's Eel and Pie shop (at number 1). None of these buildings exist today. The site is now part of Chrisp Street Market, Britain's first purpose-built shopping precinct developed for the 1951 Festival of Britain.
