Title
Junction of Devons Road and Bow Common Lane
Description
The junction of Devons Road with Bow Common Lane, looking east, in Bromley-by-Bow. A hoarding on the right marks the site of the Moor's Arms, a Charrington's public house at 78 Bow Common Lane that was completely destroyed by World War II bombs in September 1940. The three-storey house that makes the left frame of this picture is number 80, Bow Common Lane. The house was demolished in early 1960s. A Leyland RTL bus stops to allow a mother and her two small children to cross Devons Road at the zebra crossing by a Belisha beacon. A man in a long dark overcoat and cap stands by the crossing and looks to the right. An ornate cast-iron street lamp is on his left. On the opposite side of the street, a woman walks towards a parked Vauxhall 12 brand car. Further along, to the right, an isolated building displays a sign on its upper floor advertising a cafe. Nothing remains of this scene in the photograph. Mixed residential and commercial development now occupies the bomb site while opposite are gardens and modern blocks of flats.
