Description
View of the central yard of the Beecham Food Ltd works at 19-23 Westferry Road, Isle of Dogs, looking towards the West India and Millwall Docks, with cranes visible behind the two-storey works building at the end of the yard. Beecham Foods Ltd took over C. and E. Morton Ltd jam manufacturers in the 1950s. C. and E. Morton which opened on the Westferry Road site in 1872 was at one time the largest employer on the Isle of Dogs. A partly visible workman is walking towards the barrels and crates. On the left hand side of the yard is evidence of World War II bomb damage. The buildings likely date from the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. The works was later demolished and apartment buildings and their surrounding grounds were built on the site in 2008.
