Description
General view of 109-119 Poplar High Street, Poplar, looking north-west towards the corner of Woodstock Terrace. Number 117 is the Poplar Town Hall and Council offices. The Town Hall, with iron area railings and an octagonal tower capped by a copper dome with finial, was built on the corner site in 1870. The main entrance is in the corner tower and the building is constructed of stock brick with Portland stone dressings in a High Victorian free Gothic style with some Venetian detailing. To the left of the council building is a partial view of St Matthias's Vicarage at 115 Poplar High Street, a two-storey, brick built detached house now called Meridian House. Further down the street on the right behind a stone and railing boundary is a bowling green which was subsequently moved further west to make way for the Poplar Play Centre. In the far distance, on the north side of the street is a metal works at 109 Poplar High Street and behind that are the top floors of Leyland House social housing in the Will Crooks estate on Hale Street. Closest to the camera on the corner of Woodstock Terrace on the right, is 119 Poplar High Street which is Lala Cafe serving teas and luncheons. The cafe has advertisements for Turf cigarettes, with a winged white horse motif, above the windows which have Gingham and plain curtains hanging inside on the lower half. On the pavement next to the entrance to the cafe is a cast iron electrical distribution box (marked El P on contemporary maps). A belisha beacon, a pillar letter box and an emergency telephone are visible on the corner of Woodstock Terrace. Two lines of dots in the road lead to a second belisha beacon and an ornate, cast iron lamp post are also visible on the south side of the street. The Town Hall and council offices have since been converted to the Lansbury Heritage Hotel. The Poplar Town Hall was Grade II listed in 1983, listing number1260135. St Matthias's Vicarage was Grade II listed in 1950, listing number1357883.
