Front elevation of a terrace of shops and flats at 243-263 Poplar High Street, Poplar, looking west from the corner of Preston's Road. In the background, on the corner of Bazely Street, is the side elevation of the four-storey Commodore House, flats 1-24, built by Poplar Borough Council in 1935-6. The three-storey terrace of shops and maisonettes, numbered 243-263, were built in 1953-4. Several of the shops have awnings to provide shade. Number 261 is a bakers and number 263, at the end of the terrace, is a newsagents with 'A' boards outside with various mastheads advertising that days news headlines. A Fordson E83W delivery van is parked in the street next to a [major road ahead] road sign and a K6 telephone box. A woman with a pushchair walks past the shops and a small, round, brick raised bed with a small tree surrounded by a cleft wood fence is visible.
